At a recent Castleknock/Mulhuddart Local Area Committee, Fingal County Council’s Parks Department outlined proposals to convert some Open Space (OS) lands to areas of ‘Wildflower’ cultivation. The proposals are wide but are essentially being flagged as an attempt to add increased biodiversity to our parks and grasslands. However, the plans include many housing estates throughout Fingal and there are implications for Dublin 15 housing estates as well.

Clearly, There are advantages to allowing areas of wild growth in parts of our parks and, in particular, within the Tolka River Valley. I also see this as an attempt to take away the monotonous look that many grass lands have due to the presence of undulating hills with clean cut grass with little or no diversity.

However, the prospect of wild areas growing within Dublin 15 housing estates has lead to concerns that they will become unclean and not maintained. There are also fears that rodent and other vermin infestation may become a feature of these wild-growing areas.

Please see below for a list of the prospective housing estates that are due to be affected by the proposed changes:

Councillor David McGuinness would like those people affected by these changes to contact him and give opinions on these proposals. This will come before a full council meeting of Fingal County Council in the near future so it is important to get the public opinion on what Fingal County Council’s Parks department have forward for consideration.
